Smokes cool and evenly, not for the social smoker as this blend may offend some noses but may impress others. Flavor wise, it's not as strong as one might expect and I'd say the nic level is medium. The Latakia is pretty much is the main driver, and the orientals do give some tea like qualities. Not much to say beyond that. perfectly! A blast o' latakia smoke and sweetness that never gives quarter. . The smoke was heavy yet disappeared quickly, but whether I sipped or puffed it stayed heavy until half way down the bowl when it grew even thicker and did not disappear. Breaking off a chunk and rubbing it out with your fingers isn't difficult at all, but you might want to wash your hands afterwards. I use English Oriental very lightly packed. If you're looking for a delicious lat bomb then PK is your blend, but if you're looking for a lat bomb with a stronger Turkish presence I highly recommend Star of the East Flake. When I lit it up, my sample smoked like a purring kitten. The smoke from the Pirates Kake draws me in. My sample is from 1995 or 1996 and was stored until 2001 without adequate moisture control. That being said, I wouldnt recomm end this to a Latakia newbie, I think itd be way too much. I can see why some like this alot, and some who would never smoke it more than an initial bowl. I thought the smoke was gonna be the way it smelled, but to my surprise it was a soapy like smooth smoke that had a uniq ue odor without tongue bite. The aftertaste is yummy smokey incensy latakia. My wife likes the smell of this tobacco the best of all the tobacco I have, your wife probably won't. The room note is very cigar like, so be careful or get banished to walk the plank! Just beware of the extremely strong room note: while not particularly nasty (unless you hate latakia), its ghost will haunt your house for many days, haunting your house!!! The overwhelming sensory overload of so much latakia might make some believe that there is "strength" in this mixture. However, I didn't find the same results in smaller pipes or even my briars so I might have just had an off day. No less than 70% of the dark smokey leaf goes into this blend, an amazing amount. I might relight this as many as 5 times in the course of a medium sized bowl. They have the Latakia and Burley playing so well together in this blend. Pirate Kake is an interesting smoke, providing a full serving of Latakia. Worth a try if you love the dark stuff, but be careful with it - it can knock you back. I also get some almonds, vanilla, and a bit of anise/licorice. With the majority of this being Latakia, you should know what to expect. However, 70% + of Latakia makes this blend unidimensional. Pirate kake is quite a bit sharper and overwhelming if you smoke it too fast. This one stays creamy mild all the way, an occasional sourness & then sweetness, both pleasant, don't really shake up the Latakia's prominence. Latakia is out front with maybe a hint of vanilla hidden way , way, way in the background. This blend always takes me to the fall season in Michigan, no matter what time of year. Still great stuff, but only for once in awhile, like after a charred steak dinner, or for when the urge for something immense and overpowering is desired. -- UPDATE -- awesome blended with some Lane 1Q 1/3 Pirate Kake, and 2/3 1Q - marinate for a week in a baggie. Surprisingly the nicotine content is not that high, mind you Latakia on its own is no Howitzer either. Its straightforward, in-your-face, smoky and leathery, latakia and turkish. That is a very good blend but its not a lat bomb. The room note won't make you any friends (although my wife enjoys it), and any pipe you smoke it in will be ghosted forevermore, but it's worth it. It joins a favorite list and while it wont be a regular part of my rotation I definitely will smoke it when I need something different in my smoking rotation. Cornell & Diehl Pirate Kake - Having my only taste of Latakia being Plum Pudding and having read so much about what a latakia bomb like Pirate Kake would be like I went in a little intimitaded. It's a great cool weather smoke and one of my favorites for outdoor puffing (which is where my wife prefers I take it) which is good because the room note isn't going to make you any friends among non-smokers. A harsh characteristic smell of the latakia hits your face as you open the tin. This is a fantastic Latakia smoke! The lat is very forward and pronounced in this. I really want to like it, but it's too strong. I tried this in my well broken in corncob while I was outside gardening on a fairly windy day. Outstanding aroma, flavor and smoke. Once again C&D is probably my favourite Tobacco company as the blends are spot on and the quality of tobaccos they use seem to be carefully selected and properly kept as far as humidity before blending. Although there is reportedly 70%+ Latakia in this blend, it is smooth and satisfying with addition of other tobaccos.
